Règles de l'art
Law and art follow fundamentally different logics: whereas law is comprised of norms and constraints, art emerges through creation and imagination. Nevertheless, works of art cannot escape the legal rules governing, among other things, their creation, sale and conservation. Règles de l'art seeks to build bridges between these fields and provide counsel so that the law can become a tool for the benefit of of artists, dealers, institutions and other players in the cultural world.
François Le Moine advises and represents clients on a wide range of legal issues such as acquisitions, restitutions, authenticity, museum policies, copyright, and the Cultural Property Export and Import Act, including its tax implications. François provides legal advice, negotiates contracts, and also offers litigation services. Moreover, he regularly assists other legal professionals with mandates involving cultural property.
François teaches art and heritage law at the Université de Montréal. He is president of the Association littéraire et artistique internationale (Canada), sits on the permanent public art commission of Culture Montréal and on the boards of several cultural organizations. He graduated from the Sorbonne, the École des hautes études en sciences sociales and McGill University. He also studied at the universities of Keio, Shantou, Copenhagen and Geneva.
